There is a legend, Rolex named the Cosmograph Daytona for the State of Florida speedway Daytona Beach; Another saying is that the Daytnoa got its name from the origin of a different classic story: when the rolex made the Cosmograph oyster Daytona watch, it just the time of the opening of United States Daytona motor racing, Rolex sent the Cosmograph chronograph to compete as the appointed timing equipment of the conference, and was selected in final, so Rolex vendors named this series as Daytona watches.
The early watches of the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona have special dial color which now is referred as Exotic dial: watch dial of white background with black small three stitches watch bezel (registers), or black watch dial with white small three stitches watch bezel, while the time scale of the small three stitches watch bezel are marked with square tag. Other features that are different from the modern Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona watches include the movement of manual winding (Ref.16520 in 1988 which is using the El Primero automatic winding movement of Zenith), watch case of atypical Oyster stainless steel (stainless steel non – Oyster cases), timing button of non – screw – down pushers but the 6263 and 6265 in the later having already adopted screwdown pushers, and watch crown is not the Triplock crown. The Daytona watches with these characteristics are those watches particularly later nicknamed as Paul Newman, whose value and collection value are far different from other styles of subsequent watches. As a result, some people insist that only the Daytona Ref. 6239 and Ref. 6241 are the real Daytona Paul Newman.
Rolex Daytona current chronograph has more than ten years from the one updated in 2000, although the appearance and function have no so much change, it is one of the most popular series in Rolex brand, Daytona continues updating its watch movement and outer material, to achieve the most perfect chronograph at contemporary era.
